Planning a Trip to the UK: What Gulf Travellers Should Know

Quick answer

Before travelling, check the current UK entry requirements for your nationality on GOV.UK, including whether you need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or a visa. Then book early for July and August, expect to find halal food and mosques in the main cities, remember that driving is on the left, and carry a contactless card and a power adapter for UK plugs.

Check entry requirements first

UK entry rules have changed in recent years, and they depend on your nationality, your residence and the purpose of your trip. Many visitors who do not need a visa must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they fly. Requirements and fees can change, so always check the official GOV.UK pages for your passport before you book, and allow time in case anything needs to be corrected. Make sure every passport in the family is valid for the whole stay. We cannot give immigration advice, but we are happy to help with the travel arrangements once your documents are in order.

When to book

The Gulf summer break overlaps with the UK's busiest weeks in July and August, when hotels, cars and popular routes fill early. Eid holidays can also create short periods of high demand. Booking transfers and tours several weeks ahead is sensible, and our best time to visit the UK guide explains how the seasons compare. The UK is two or three hours behind most Gulf countries depending on the season, so jet lag is mild.

Flights and arrival

Several Gulf airlines fly to London and Manchester, and some fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow, so check current routes. London has several airports, so confirm which one your ticket uses before arranging pick-up. After a long flight, border queues and baggage can take time. A pre-arranged airport transfer with flight monitoring means your driver is waiting even if you are delayed.

Halal food and prayer

Halal restaurants and shops are easy to find in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, and many mainstream restaurants and supermarkets label halal or vegetarian options clearly. Mosques are available in the main cities, including the large Glasgow Central Mosque and the Edinburgh Central Mosque, and a prayer-time and Qibla app on your phone is useful on longer drives. If you are on a Highland route, plan food and prayer stops in advance because villages can be far apart. When in doubt, ask whether meat is halal, and choose fish or vegetarian dishes.

Getting around and driving

In the UK you drive on the left. Many rural roads are narrow, and in the Highlands you will meet single-track roads with passing places. Parking in city centres is limited and expensive. This is why many of our guests choose a private vehicle with a driver instead of hiring a car, and why it suits families who want to rest, shop and sightsee without worrying about navigation. In London, public transport accepts contactless cards, so you rarely need tickets.

Money, phones, plugs and practical details

  • Payments: contactless cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere. Carry a little cash for small purchases in rural areas.
  • Currency: the pound sterling. Scottish banknotes are valid currency and widely used in Scotland, but some shops in England may be reluctant to accept them, so spend them before leaving Scotland.
  • Phones: an eSIM or a UK data plan is usually cheaper than roaming. Check with your provider before you leave.
  • Plugs: UK sockets are Type G at 230V. Bring a UK adapter.
  • Tipping: in restaurants, a service charge of 10 to 12.5 per cent is common and is sometimes added to the bill. Check the receipt before tipping again.
  • Health: visitors may be charged for some NHS care, so travel insurance is strongly recommended. In an emergency call 999 or 112.

Weather and what to wear

British weather can offer sun, wind and rain in one day. Layers and a light waterproof are more useful than heavy coats outside winter. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than formal footwear. If you travel in the Gulf summer, expect the UK to feel cool by comparison, particularly in Scotland. There is no dress restriction for visitors, so wear what you are comfortable in.

Travelling with family and privacy in mind

Many families prefer private arrangements, with flexible timing, rest stops for children and a driver who handles luggage and routes. We shape our service around these preferences, with Arabic-speaking support available on request and a direct contact on WhatsApp throughout the trip. Browse our services or message us with your dates and we will propose a plan.
